Although your yacht may be 'parked' in the harbor, there may come a time when you need to take it to a new home. If you decide to sail, it will be a trip that could be a lot longer than usual, and if you decide to get a boat transport service, you should be aware of how they operate. Moving a yacht can be costly as well, therefore ensure you have adequate resources.

If your yacht has to be towed by vehicle on land, it is best that you find a reliable company to organize the expedition. Do some research before choosing one so that you know you will be accepting a good price for the services offered, as well as a company that is knowledgeable regarding yacht transportation on land. They must also have the right equipment to move your particular yacht. Although you can try to find a good price, any form of transportation will be quite expensive.

Boats are heavy, and therefore need a strong truck to pull them. Sometimes large items like boats need certain permits to be able to move on roadways. These permits are referred to as DOT permits, or Department of Transportation permits. The measurements of your yacht will determine the requirements. The length and height of the yacht should be determined, and the measurements should be from the bottom of the keel to the top piece that cannot be dismantled.

A shipping company will often provide a quote based on how big the yacht is, and how far it needs to travel. Collect a few quotes and then decide which company will be best to handle your precious yacht. Most companies offer insurance within their quote, which adds some peace of mind.

The yacht will need to be ready for traveling. A couple of things need to be done for safety and for protection purposes. For example, there should be no gas in the yacht, and sometimes shrink-wrapping is required of the hull so that moisture does not cause damage. The shipping company that you have chosen should let you know of all the things that must be organized beforehand.

Boats are often relocated by way of the sea if they are able to efficiently sail the distance required. You can choose to hire people who are capable of sailing your yacht to the new location. There are businesses that offer services such as this. Before your yacht can leave, however, all licenses must be updated and all safety requirements will need to be met.

If you have some time to spare, you might even decide to sail your own yacht to its new harbor. Good and enthusiastic sailors often do this, although they usually gather up a skilled crew to go with them. The crew can be friends or hired persons, but they must be good sailors with some experience. The yacht will need to be stocked with food, water and all other necessary supplies.

Ferry services for boats are available from certain cities. This could be a slightly cheaper option than by road, and one that you may find preferable. The ferry ships are made so that they can load boats easily, without a crane or other heavy lifting device.
