There Are Publicly Traded Sports Teams

No one is able to be a sports team owner, typically, without being filthy, stinking wealthy. However, that isn't really always the case, as some groups really trade on stock markets and individuals can buy shares. Some publicly-traded sports groups are not exactly bad choices, either.

Most American not public

One of the lyrics in the song "Money" by Pink Floyd goes "I think I need a football team." Granted, they don't mean the National Football League, since soccer is called football everywhere except Canada, Australia and the U.S. However, it would be neat to be the owner of sports team. The hitch is that most sports teams are privately owned. To purchase one or an ownership stake, one has to be wealthy.

You could always purchase a share in a publicly-traded sports team though, and technically you own part of the team for a small amount of money. There are only a few numbers of sports groups publicly traded though, and most of them are not U.S. teams.

Fastest Initial Public Offering on earth

The Wall Street Journal explained that Formula One, the premier racing series in the world, could not hold its initial public offering prepared for earlier this year due to decisions made by majority owner CVC Capital Partners. Later this year, the Initial Public Offering in Singapore might still take place, though it is on hold for now.

Rather than doing an IPO in Singapore where the Manchester United was planning on doing it originally, it is being done in the United States, which is great news. The Wall Street Journal explained that the Glazer family owns the majority of the Manchester team, which is the New York Yankees of soccer, and they also own the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of Football. The Initial Public Offering is already scheduled, according to the Atlantic.

Only some are decent buys

Since Manchester United is the biggest sports franchise on the planet, it is most likely a pretty good buy. The Madison Square Gardens have traded for over the Standard and Poor 500 industry average consistently too, which means it is a good purchase too, according to Daily Finance.

According to Daily Finance, it would not be good to publicly trade World Wrestling Entertainment since it has not been doing very well. BusinessWeek also points out that the American Basketball Association is trading for 5 cents per share, which is also bad.

The average stock is going to do better than some other well-known soccer teams that have been on the industry. Losing streaks lead to bad share value considering game performance determines market performance.

The Green Bay Packers are the only team in America that is publicly owned. It is bad investment though since stock cannot be sold for profit and pays no dividends. The NFL does not allow over 32 owners at a time for any one team, but the Packers got past that rule by joining the league before the rule started.
